It all began with suicide cases mounting among farmers in Karnataka. And the decision was taken to seed clouds with chemicals to make rain after two suicides were reported from Mandya, CM S.M. Krishna’s home district. Now, after the initial success, the drought-beleaguered state government appears to have spotted hope. Rainmakers were delighted when it poured in a few places in and around the areas—on Bangalore’s outskirts—over which the Piper Cheyenne aircraft flew on August 18, under ‘Project Varuna’, with two ministers on board. The aircraft was flown in from the US by Weather Modification Inc, the organisation that bagged the contract for inducing rain. Beginning next week, the aircraft will fly regular sorties over the next 90 days.
