An actor father, also a brother in films. Why did you become a VJ?
It just happened. I auditioned and I got the job.

But wouldn't films have been the logical choice?
I knew I wanted to be part of the entertainment world but I didn't decide on acting till much much later.

After 1947 you did a play in New York. Why the shift in media?
East is East is a play by an Anglo-Pakistani playwright where I play a rebellious son of a Pakistani father and an English mother which is set in Manchester. The play had an 11-week run and I enjoyed it. I've always wanted to do theatre.

Some reviews label 1947 a superficial film lacking resonance and texture...
A movie can never capture what's in a book but Deepa Mehta has been able to capture the essence. And the writer is thrilled with the adaptation, which is important.

How difficult was it to enact your maiden love scene?
It was difficult. Both Nandita and I were nervous but Deepa made us comfortable.

Why haven't you signed on any new films?
That's the life of an actor: unpredictable.

From Deepa Mehta to David Dhawan. Will you make that shift?
I haven't seen his films. But when I see a project I decide on its merit, not the genre.

Why didn't your father launch you as he did your brother Akshaye?
It just didn't happen that way. There was no obvious reason for it.

What kind of a professional relationship do you share with Akshaye?
We're both appreciative of each other's work but we don't spend hours sharing notes. It's totally non-interfering.

The role of the masseur is said to be close to your own personality. Did that make it easier for you to essay that character?
