When Justice Liberhan finally submitted his report on Ayodhya, after spending an extraordinary 17 years labouring over the events of December 6, 1992, he added another word to the already well-established lexicon on Atal Behari Vajpayee: “pseudo-moderate”. Chroniclers of contemporary history have long grappled with the complexities of the former prime minister. Was he double-faced or just the right man in the wrong party? Was he a mere mask for the designs of the larger Sangh parivar or a genuine liberal in an umbrella organisation that also accommodated a lunatic fringe?

Vajpayee was the ultimate pundit, one who had mastered the art of moral ambiguities and dualism inherent in the great Indian traditions. Justice Liberhan gave it another name when he called him a “pseudo-moderate”. It’s a delicious phrase to use for a leader of a party that had coined the term pseudo-secularist. The immediate joke in political circles is that Justice Liberhan took a very long time to discover what RSS/BJP ideologue K.N....
