Few cartoonists can write as well as they draw. R.K. Laxman does superb sketches but his captions are clumsily worded. This is odd given that he is R.K. Narayan’s brother. The late Abu Abraham was good at both. Rajinder Puri also falls in this group. Bull’s Eye is a compilation of his columns and cartoons that have appeared in this magazine over the past five years. Before I’m accused of favouritism, let me add that our paths have never crossed.

Such pieces, however elegant, are best enjoyed in small doses. But I suppose there is a market for such a book. We have here over a 100 nuggets on the follies and foibles of our leaders. There is a hilarious parody of Nehru’s tryst with destiny speech. Politicians are Puri’s most frequent targets and he hits the bull’s eye most times. "vips don’t need dogs. They keep black cats."

The wit is there. So it is all the more surprising to learn that the author was once on the national executive of the BJP, a party not renowned for its sense of humour. Puri is a master of brevity. It requires talent to write short, succinct sentences. Like this one.
