The dismissal of a petition by the Supreme Court, pleading review of one of its judgements in which conviction led to death sentence for a 'juvenile', has led to human rights groups and lawyers raising the demand for an open debate on death penalty.

The review petition contended that the accused was a little over 15 at the time of committing the offence and as the trial wasn't conducted in the juvenile court the proceedings were fit to be quashed. According to the Juvenile Justice Act, a juvenile is not liable for even imprisonment, leave alone the death penalty.
