THE long-awaited magnum opus—a festschrift to former finance minister Dr Manmohan Singh—is finally here to mark the 50th year of India's independence and his 65th birthday. Like all good festschrifts, a galaxy of internationally acclaimed economists have got together to pay a lavish tribute to the man who, with a little help from circumstance, rewrote the economic destiny of India. Indeed, Manmohan Singh is one of the very few practising economic administrators who has bridged the gap between theory and practice.

The book is divided into four broad sections: India's development strategy, transition to an open economy, poverty and reform and centre-state relations.
