Mr Clean vs The Dirty Dozen: Roulette Rules

Vilasrao Deshmukh’s chair is safe for now. But there’s a rather crucial lesson for the chief minister in the skin-of-the-teeth escape he recently had: he has more detractors in his house than he realised. And though the campaign by dissidents to get him replaced didn’t quite succeeed, it demonstrated his fragility to 10 Janpath and his stock has plummeted.

It’s no secret that state Congress chief Govindrao Adik has been badmouthing Deshmukh. But that’s only a sneak peek as far as anti-Deshmukh dissidence goes. Chief minister-hopefuls Patangrao Kadam, Rohidas Patil and Sushilkumar Shinde too would love to see him go. And then there is Ranjeet Deshmukh, who was unceremoniously dropped from the state cabinet.
