Meal for two without alcohol: Rs 2,500
While French cuisine seems to be the new Chinese, with little French restaurants mushrooming all over the city, Rara Avis serves it to you a bit differently. To begin with, the place is run by a Frenchman, and the food excels both in taste and presentation (a key aspect of French cuisine). For starters, the Warm Goat Cheese Salad (Rs 340) is a must. The cheese here is not served in little cubes like you would find elsewhere but slathered onto hard baguette slices and baked, making it visually appealing and enhancing its taste and texture at once. The Onion Soup (Rs 240) goes well with the salad, and the Meat Pate (Rs 380) tasted very fresh.
Among the mains, the Meat Fondue (Rs 1,680) is a hands-down winner. The portion serves two and allows you to cook your meats at the table and enjoy it with different sauces. The other standout dish is the Chicken Cordon Blue (Rs 480), stuffed with ham, mushroom and cheese. While meaty options find lots of space on the Rara Avis menu, vegetarians should not feel discouraged. The Spinach and Ricotta Cheese Pancakes are delightful, and so is the lasagna. To finish off, the Lemon Tart (Rs 220) is light and tangy and the Chocolate Fondue with fruits (Rs 720) sinful.
Rara Avis, in its opening quarter, lives up to its name (which means a rare bird. or a unique thing) but the real test will be consistency, which is where many other restaurants in the city have failed.
