A planned symbolic protest on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti in Karnataka was delivered a perverse revenge-in-advance—that too in chief minister S.M. Krishna’s home district, Mandya. The Dalit Sangharsha Samiti in the state was planning to enter a temple to protest untouchability. But in Gummanahalli village, ritual humiliation and violence was in store for the Dalits. On April 12, Dalits of the village were attacked by upper-caste Hindus after a lower-caste woman tried to draw water from a village tank. The attack left 11 Dalits, including two women, seriously injured. The police has arrested 20 men on charges of violence. Union minister for public distribution V. Srinivas Prasad has accused the local administration of turning a blind eye towards such atrocities.
