There's a fundamental problem with Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon. I am not too convinced why any girl, even if she's outrightly giddy like Sanjana (Kareena Kapoor), can ever fall for a guy like Prem (Hrithik), who doesn't just behave like a dimwit on a perpetual high but doesn't even look hot and sexy as he's wont to. And, even if she does mistakenly serenade him (very chastely, mind you), it should be amply clear to her that the other Prem (AB Jr) will make a much better love of her life, and we're not just talking from the perspective of his hefty bank balance here.

But how can a Rajshri heroine ever commit the paap of looking beyond her pehla pyaar? Even if she's okay about flashing flesh and baring legs. Yes, she'll frolic on the beach but with parental sanction. She'll kiss but only fleetingly. It's this phony progressiveness that irks. Okay, Sooraj doffs the hat to Girl Power and shows a pleasant father-daughter relationship. But that's all. Ultimately, the highlight of the film—the love, friendship and sex debate—remains puerile and corny. The goody-goody family continues to cycle out on picnics, the trademark pets (it's a dog and a silly animated parrot) share the dining table, the ever-pliant servants become the butt of jokes, the banter gets more infantile, the tricks more callow, the sweetness all too cloying. Hrithik is the biggest letdown—he's completely ill at ease here with affected expressions, hammy utterances and effeminate mannerisms. Kareena thankfully reins in her yelling and shouting. And AB Junior is a welcome relief! Just the fact that he doesn't talk pointlessly is enough to lend him depth and gravitas. Which also holds true for Pankaj Kapoor, the only other sensible soul in the film.

Some things are best left untouched. Sooraj shouldn't have meddled with Basu Chatterjee's whimsical Chitchor humour and the charming characters. What could have been a straight tale of mistaken identities meanders on and on, from New Zealand to Canada to India, from Valentine's Day to Friendship Day. We're told that Sooraj has now lopped off 21 minutes of the film's footage. Which might just make the film more watchable.
