‘CM Oommen Chandy and Co’, that’s how the Opposition calls the state government. The Congress-led UDF, desperate for excuses to explain the crashing defeats in the recent assembly bypolls, has concluded that something needs to be done to restore the faith of the people. Chandy feels ground can be regained by pursuing a string of populist proposals which can be tom-tommed at election time next year. Plans include sops to farmers, small-scale industry, fishermen and what have you. Chandy’s calculations conjure up images of all ruling political dispensations in Kerala till now—as they hurtle towards the fag end of the term, there sets in a disconnect with the masses. Which leads to the typical Kerala phenomenon of governance alternating between the two major coalitions every five years.
