Parents were taught yet another lesson in fear this week. And the terror tutorial came from a most unlikely quarter: Delhi's Mirambika school, one of the country's best-known experimental educational endeavours, run by the Sri Aurobindo Education Society. Denial, disbelief and dread took turns reading the headlines that flashed news of a Mirambika teacher's arrest this Wednesday; he'd been charged with repeated sexual abuse of a four-and-a-half-year-old boy. The violations had happened, alleged the distraught parents, "near a slide, at the junior park and inside the library". Accusations that unleash shivers down spines, and let loose alarming doubts into spaces we think are safest for our children.

Unfortunately, neither these doubts, nor the current story being played out in Mirambika, seem fated to find quick resolve. The beginning of the story though is somewhat clearer.
