After Diwali, as extra layers of clothes come out, so does the feeling that even the body has piled on a few layers of fat. So, we take the tried, tested (and failed) route of ‘detox’. Basically cut out fat, drink flavourless liquids, starve, etc. No, the layers don’t melt, but the willpower surely does. Here’s an easy and yummy indigenous way: tulsi pooja is a festival which worships the medicinal herb basil and marks the end of the Diwali (therefore overeating). One of the foods that is celebrated is gur or jaggery. Every community across India will mix their local or regional grain with jaggery and ghee to prepare a sweet to mark this festival. Maharashtrians will make poha with jaggery, south Indians payasam, etc.

It’s another festival that deepens the bond between nature, humans and food, ensuring good health and immune response. As Diwali ends, temperature drops and blocked sinuses, running noses, coughing bouts increase. The digestive health also seems to drop, mostly because of overeating, but also due to change in climate. This is exactly where mixtures of ghee and gur come in, as the perfect cleansers of the insides—lungs and intestines—and work as a digestive aid too.

So, if you are feeling bloated and in a desperate need to detox, just mix gur and ghee and have it with every main meal like lunch and dinner. Ayurveda even celebrates gur for its property to increase majja or health of the bone marrow. With winter setting in, every bit towards better bone mineral density is welcome.
