Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh, the de facto maharaja of his erstwhile kingdom of Patiala, is determined to restore some of the town’s past grandeur. Not only has it been spruced up for an eight-day cultural heritage extravaganza, Amarinder also has other goodies in store for his ‘subjects’. A 500-acre posh township is to be developed by the Punjab Urban Development Authority on the outskirts of Patiala and the government is in the process of acquiring land for it. The old town, too, has been allocated Rs 2 crore for upgrading its civic infrastructure. The Opposition is crying foul, saying Amarinder is attempting to score some advantage for wife Parneet Kaur, likely to be renominated for the Patiala Lok Sabha seat.
