Meal for two:?Rs 700
The popular TI cycles brand has given Chennai the country’s first bicycle-inspired cafe, naming it ‘ciclo’ (cycle in Spanish), filling the ground floor with the trendiest bicycles on sale, using bicycle chains from which to hang chandeliers, plastering the walls with parts....
The staff is friendly and make you comfortable as you decide from a menu printed like a broadsheet. It’s mainly variations on the theme of pasta and pizza with all manner of fizzy, frothy drinks whipped and stirred in see-through kitchens. Some items are displayed delicatessen style, so you can choose your quiches and tarts.
The menu suggests Cafe Gourmand at Rs 295. You can have “an espresso and a selection of mignardises”, introduced in a Paris cafe in 2005. It basically means bite-sized tarts and petit fours, tiny pastries. There’s also a recommendation for a salted caramel cheesecake and waffles on special days.
We opt for a quiche, chicken nuggets and a pizza Margherita, all of which are adequate without being memorable. The salad, for instance, is as limp as a dehydrated cyclist. The desserts look sensational; a lavishly plated eggless walnut brownie and a Creme Brule that comes in a dinky little pot with a smart cap of caramelised sugar. Would your Parisian gourmand be happy, however, with a frozen Brule without a topping of melted sugar? Worse that the creme is more scrambled egg than custard. Then again the Ciclo menu changes every month, so next time a new cycle belt and we’ll be raring to go again.
