Given the scale of the tragedy, questions have been asked about why Indian companies, so prompt in promising hundreds of crores to the Prime Minister’s call for a ‘Swachh Bharat’, have been so slow in pledging their support to the relief effort in Jammu and Kashmir. Didn’t these same industrialists line up a few years ago in Srinagar promising industries and employment for Kashmiris? While it is early days to tot up the corporate tally, ordinary Indians—and the India outside Kashmir—are standing up for Kashmir’s flood victims, sweeping aside sections of the Indian social media who have attacked anyone expressing sympathy for ‘Muslim’ Kashmiris.

“Response from people however has been fairly good,” says Abhilash Babu. When ActionAid India set up a kiosk at Ambience Mall, Gurgaon, it gathered Rs 6 lakh in two days, recalls Babu. Companies such as Tatas, NTT Data, Zensar and Ranbaxy were also quick to offer assistance.
