I’ve been living in JNU since 1978 and have seen some significant changes. The social ambience of the campus has changed dramatically over the last decade. It’s partly because of the expansion of the university in terms of both the teaching as well as the student community. It’s also owing to the competitive spirit that has come to afflict the academic life. The campus is not culturally alive any more, it doesn’t have the vibrancy a cosmopolitan residential university must have. One misses the mushairas and kavi sammelans that should take place on a regular basis. Only when you mount such a cultural campaign can you crusade for social integration more effectively.

Only then can the university become an effective vehicle for the promotion and dissemination of such ideas. The elite profile of JNU has changed largely because of reservations which I welcome and value. A large number of social groups can now be integrated in the mainstream.
