Cupcakes have image issues. Blame it on Sex and the City, which portrayed cupcakes as the girls’ go-to confection, right up there with Manolo Blahniks and Cosmopolitans. The satc film, in fact, took a dig at the series-spawned trends, when Charlotte inquires why they stopped drinking Cosmos, and Carrie replies: “Because everyone else started”. As I said, image issues.
But not only that. Most cupcakes available in Bangalore are too much of a muchness: sponge cake and icing—what the Americans call frosting—in large, sweet packages that force me to stop at one, or less. So what appealed to me straightaway at this tiny outlet was that the cupcakes can be finished off in a couple of bites. And leave you wanting for more, because the sponge is moist and light as air, the frosting offers a complex contrast and the flavours, while not wildly original, tickle the right tastebuds. As a chocolate addict, I loved Chocolate City, topped with a thin layer of dark chocolate and sprinkles, and Gooey Chocolate, a two-bite take on the done-to-death fondue cake. The Red Velvet is either a classic or commonplace, depending on your point of view, but I liked the cream cheese crown. I didn’t care for the jam-topped cupcakes—Orange Marmalade and Blueberry—but the Spanish Caramel, with a dollop of dulce de leche baked into the sponge, packs a surprise punch. The outlet itself is functional, the display small and they down shutters the moment they sell out. Recommended for all cupcake agnostics, if you’re ready to be converted.
