There is a sudden burst of Byomkesh Bakshi films, cinematic renditions of Saradindu Bandyopadhyay’s stories on the ‘satyanweshi’ sleuth. Rituparno Ghosh, Anjan Dutta and Dibakar Banerjee have all tried their hands. This is actor-turned-director Arindam Sil’s offering. Last winter, Sil tested the water by making a brilliant thriller on another fictional detective, Shabar Roy. However, Har Har Byomkesh, though well-made (soothing cinematography, crisp editing, period costumes that are brilliantly detailed) doesn’t stand out from the crowd of Byomkesh films. For instance, Abir, who has already played the sleuth three times, doesn’t bring any newness to the role. The engaging plot is Saradindu’s. Sil can be credited with a good enough narration of it.

After his first wife leaves, a wealthy but ailing Benaras zamindar marries a woman half his age. In the meantime, his friend, a top cop of the region, invites his good friend Byomkesh, the well-known Calcutta detective, to visit Benaras along with his wife Satyabati and assistant Ajit. While they are in town, the zamindar is murdered. The suspects are everyone—from his doctor and his brother to his wife. Sil manages to keep the whodunit mystery alive till the end.
