Scanning Google Trends—a daily listing of its "hot" searches—is a surefire and addictive way to get a peek into what’s occupying the Indian Internet surfer. Not surprisingly, the listing is dominated by university admissions and public sector recruitment tests. Then, many want to know if they have been allotted Tata’s small car Nano. There’s a bit of Bollywood and music—and, yes, some sex of the mms variety does slip into this sanitised list. But, surprisingly, there’s barely a glimmer of good old-fashioned gossip.

Thus the question: are multiple technologies, coupled with too much information on tap (and too little time), leading to a slowdown in the fine art of gossiping? Well, there are many who agree, pointing to all the personal information vomited out on social networking sites—like Facebook and Twitter—that has led to a sense of ennui of sorts. If people voluntarily reveal so much (did I really need to know you find New York firefighters hot?), then where is the joy in the hunt for that little morsel of spicy...
