The writing was on the wall. But it was a humiliating exit from the presidentship of the JD(U) for George Fernandes. He was defeated by Sharad Yadav who polled 413 votes to Fernandes’ 25. All those considered close to him—Sambhu Srivastava and Digvijay Singh, among others—deserted George. With Bihar CM Nitish Kumar throwing in his lot with Sharad, the result was a foregone conclusion. The exit of George is likely to redraw JD(U)’s position within the NDA. It will be far more independent and may not toe the BJP line anymore. In fact, distancing the party from the saffron forces has been one persistent demand from a vocal section within the JD(U) ever since the NDA lost the 2004 LS elections.
