Caught in a bureaucratic time warp, the pattern never seems to change. A late, lethargic start to the planning process; lots of controversies and organisational mishaps in the weeks leading up to the inaugural night, followed by 10 days of unbridled chaos and cacophony; but, at the end of the day, a fortuitous feast of first-rate films from all over the world that invariably rescue a tottering event—it's been tottering for many years now for a variety of reasons—from the brink of unmitigated disaster. It's no different this time around: for the Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF), all's well that doesn't begin well.
