The Sri Venkateswara temple here will now have woman barbers at Kalyankatta, the temple’s tonsuring centre. The move comes after an 18-month struggle by 32-year-old beautician Radha Devi, the AP Woman Barbers Association chief, who says women were uncomfortable being tonsured by male barbers. Besides, if women could perform other duties at the temple, why not tonsuring, she asks? In the beginning, outraged male barbers had protested and even threatened to harm her physically. Then the Endowments Commission passed a resolution on March 31 to allow women barbers. Even then, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam Board sat on it for six months. On October 23, it finally approved the deployment of women nais. For now, 100 women get onboard on a contract basis. They will work 8-hour shifts and be paid Rs 100 per day.
