The US PGA Tour has about 48 events in a year. Europe has 36-40 events, Japan 28-30, and Asian PGA 18-20. The Indian Tour has 22-25.
Asian PGA has a total purse of $12 million, while the 2004 Japanese Tour will carry about $ 35 million. European PGA Tour has $110 million and the 2004 US PGA Tour will have US $245 million. Indian Tour has Rs 2.4 crores (US $500,000) at stake.
On the US Tour, most events carry a purse of at least $4 million going up to $6 million. In India, the biggest is Rs 28 lakh this season.
In the US, the winner's cheque is between 18 and 20 per cent of the total purse—a winner in a $5 million event gets about $1 million.
Each year, the top 125 earners from the previous year are joined on the PGA Tour by the top 30 as also ties from the final stage of Qualifying School. Plus 'exempt' players—like past winners of Majors (Masters, PGA Championships, British and US Open) and some special categories. There are few sponsors' spot at each of these events.
