It has taken over 5,000 cases all over India for the government to wake up to the latest dengue epidemic. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) last Wednesday included dengue in an integrated national programme for prevention of mosquito-borne diseases. The disease has affected over 800 people in Delhi.

Researchers all over the country have been warning of the killer vector becoming endemic for some time. The situation has now so deteriorated that a death is being reported almost everyday. In AIIMS itself, the disease has claimed the life of a faculty member. B.A. Mohanty, assistant professor in the department of neuro-anaesthesia, died on October 15 after having been diagnosed with dengue a week earlier.
