Muslims in Gujarat are once again on the run. Reportedly over two dozen Muslim youngsters have been picked up by the Ahmedabad police during the past two weeks in connection with Haren Pandya’s murder. The telling instance is of Idris Khan Pathan who was reportedly picked up on April 7, but produced before a magistrate on April 16 after a habeas corpus petition was filed by his wife in the Gujarat High Court on April 11. Misgivings are also being expressed in connection with the detention of Syed Mehmood, 25. Mehmood was reportedly picked up on April 13, but the arrest was shown on April 18. Several missing Muslims have reportedly been in illegal custody for days on end. DCP (crime) D.G. Vanzara, however, denies such allegations and says "we’ve no need" for illegal detentions "because under pota we can get remand of suspects for 30 days".
