The hype is already on, as Ali Bacher promises much "beyond cricket"

A total of 14 teams, and 54 matches played over 42 days at 15 venues. This is essentially what the world's greatest cricket feast, the World Cup 2003 in South Africa early next year, is all about. But Ali Bacher, former South African captain and the man behind the show, insists that the first World Cup in the African continent will "go beyond cricket". This time, the tourney, he says, will be SA's big effort at "unification through sport".

Clearly, racial integration and political unification will be highlighted at Cup 2003. "The Rugby World Cup in 1995-96 had united the nation, but this unity could not be sustained. We are determined not to repeat this mistake," Bacher told Outlook recently. So, in this renewed "unification through sport", half of the 4,000 volunteers for the event will be Black, all of whom will be given special uniforms and World Cup merchandise. "This is a conscious policy to show the world that apartheid is a thing of the past," says Bacher.
