Tamil Nadu recently witnessed more than a couple of attempts at women’s empowerment. The AIADMK government has notified that parents can now use either of their names while admitting their wards to schools. And the word ‘kudimagal’ will be used to refer to a woman citizen (the male equivalent is kudimagan). CM J. Jayalalitha said to force a woman to take oath of office as kudimagan amounted to injustice. Kudimagal is now in Tamil dictionaries and will be used in official communication. This symbolic attempt apart, there’s some good news too. Two women bus drivers, Hameeda Bano and V. Savitri, have been appointed to Chennai’s metro transport fleet. They take care of the women’s special bus on the 30-km 18A route for a daily wage of Rs 164.
