Caffeine Rush Hours

The Bangalore Coffee House, an iconic witness to history, downs shutters

Caffeine Rush Hours KPN

There was a time, not long ago, when knowledge in Bangalore was not just an industry. Nor was it just the stuff that went with C.V. Raman and the generations he inspired. It was, rather, the stuff with which you wooed the opposite sex whenever you got the opportunity, or just something to be bandied about freely, in whatever form it was found.

At the heart of this ritual in Bangalore was India Coffee House on M.G. Road. When this talking shop, with its soggy dosas and plastic chairs, closes down this month, it will take with it a major part of what was once the posh front of Bangalore's cantonment. It may have started out half a century ago with turbaned waiters in spotless white uniforms hoping to cater to the upper-class pretensions of the cantonment. But it established its realistic credentials soon enough. The waiters' uniforms picked up generous doses of food and coffee stains, and the atmosphere soon became one in which the most outrageous ideas were comfortably at home.
