A pall of gloom seems to have settled over the TDP headquarters in Hyderabad. Forget the exit polls, even Naidu’s own intelligence officials have warned him that the TDP-BJP combine will get less than a third of the 147 assembly constituencies that went to the polls in the first phase. In ’99, it had won 90 of these seats. Naidu, who’s now camping in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema, is up against a strong anti-incumbency wave. Naidu’s image took a beating after the EC deleted thousands of bogus names from the electoral rolls. Even last week, the EC had to withdraw some 45,000 papers meant to be affixed on EVMs after it discovered the TDP symbols to be larger and bolder than the Opposition’s.
