While this year’s indifferent monsoon has spelt doom for most Indian farmers, it brought an unexpected windfall for a lucky few in Paritala village in Krishna district. They claim to have harvested diamonds and other precious stones while desilting a dried-up lake. The news sparked off a veritable diamond rush.
Paritala, situated on the north bank of Krishna, falls within the 1,000-odd sq km which was once the Krishna diamond mines.
The police have posted a picket in Paritala and taken one woman in for questioning. However, they are yet to recover the diamond she reportedly sold for over Rs 7 lakh to a local broker.
