Colas, Cars & Communal Harmony: A Doff To Bollywood
By Bharathi S. Pradhan
India Book Distributors Rs 195
No matter what was happening on the streets, the world of Amar Akbar Anthony inhabited the screen. Cynics consider this a ploy to win more audiences, like politicians expanding their votebanks. However, the film world mirrors the film industry: the show would stop if any community was excluded. Just look at the credits after each film and you know what I mean.

In the homes of the stars too gods from different religions live side-by-side, as this book vividly demonstrates. "Mixed marriages" are no exceptions. Aryan, Shahrukh and Gauri Khan’s five-year-old son, puts it succinctly: his god is Ganapati Allah. Take the other Khan, Salman’s family: his mother, a Hindu, used to read the Hanuman Chalisa to him when he was a child. His sister is married to a Hindu, the brother to a Catholic (Malaika Arora).

Pradhan has been able to get the stars to open up. These voices of sanity are like balm to our soul. Listen to Shahrukh: "We are going to have a prayer room with all the gods...if you ask me, I think the Gods must be saying, if it (Babri-Ayodhya) is causing such a problem, give it to Christ."
