The Punjab assembly got a rude shock when former deputy speaker and Congress legislator Bir Devinder Singh pulled up his own government for holding increasingly "short sessions" of the house. An irate Singh urged the speaker to extend the session by a few days to "provide the legislators an opportunity to speak on important issues." Singh’s ire is understandable. The state assembly wound up its winter session in just two sittings last week. Before this, it just met for a day in July and two days in March. Last week, the assembly did away with the question hour, three call attention motions, zero hour and five legislative bills in just a couple of hours. The passing of the state budget in 15 minutes flat is another dubious record of sorts.
