In four out of the five Indian tours to Pakistan in the last 50 years, the Indian captain lost his job after the series. Only Sunil Gavaskar survived in 1984-85, but that series was abandoned midway, following Indira Gandhi’s assassination. The unlucky ones:

Vinoo Mankad,1954-55
All five Tests were drawn matches in the series. Mankad performed poorly, making only 51 runs, at an average of 10.20 and claiming twelve wickets at a rate of 33.25.

Bishen Singh Bedi,1978-79
Led India to a 0-2 defeat in the three-match series. Bedi had a horrifying series, taking just six wickets at an average of 74.83.

Sunil Gavaskar,1982-83
India suffered a humiliating 0-3 drubbing in the six-match series. Although Gavaskar had a satisfying series, making 434 runs at an average of 48.22. His head didn’t roll.

Krishnamachari Srikkanth,1989-90
All the four tests were drawn. Srikkanth made only 97 runs in seven innings, at an average of 13.86. To make matters worse, he was also manhandled by a spectator.
