When Abhijeet Virmani completed his MBA, a business of his own was the last thing on his mind. In retrospect, he feels the reasons for this were simple. Institutes don’t do enough to kindle the entrepreneurial spirit, professors have little idea about it, students opt for specific courses to improve their grades rather than to learn, and the academic environment kills any risk-taking appetite. So like the 324 batchmates of his, Abhijeet went through campus interviews and joined Arthur Andersen and, in ’03, shifted to KPMG. The experience gave him the confidence to start his own consultancy that would enable him to work with several clients at the same time.

In ’04, Positron began with a single client and a share capital of Rs 1 lakh. The first two years were tough as Abhijeet had to compete with global giants like McKinsey, BCG and Accenture. Ironically, what came to his rescue was his alma mater and its alumni—his IIM-C mates helped with their contacts and networking. Abhijeet now feels that his company is on an even keel, signing a new client every month, giving the global firms a run for their money. The secret of his success is his unique model which does not focus on writing reports, but on providing complete solutions for clients. With over 40 clients and a turnover of Rs 5 crore, he is planning a geographical expansion. He also harbours dreams of writing a book.
