A Minefield Defused
The Uranium Corporation of India’s plan for setting up uranium mining and processing units in Nalgonda district received a major blow last week with the Andhra Pradesh State Pollution Board rejecting the proposal. The UCIL has been trying to set up open-cast mines at Lambapur-Peddagattu abutting the Nagarjunasagar reservoir and a processing plant 18 km from the mines at Mallapuram. Environmentalists had warned of radiation leaks and heavy-metal contamination of the reservoir. Despite the eco-costs of uranium mining, the ucil is under pressure to keep producing more fuel for a growing number of dae-run nuclear power plants.
