After Diwali, as extra layers of clothes come out, so does the feeling that even the body has piled on a few layers of fat. So, we take the tried, tested (and failed) route of ‘detox’. Basically cut out fat, drink flavourless liquids, starve, etc. No, the layers don’t melt, but the willpower surely does. Here’s an easy and yummy indigenous way: tulsi pooja is a festival which worships the medicinal herb basil and marks the end of the Diwali (therefore overeating). One of the foods that is celebrated is gur or jaggery. Every community across India will mix their local or regional grain with jaggery and ghee to prepare a sweet to mark this festival. Maharashtrians will make poha with jaggery, south Indians payasam, etc.
