The Nuts And Bolts

Here's how the survey was done: the parameters, sub-parameters, formulas

Outlook

The B-schools were ranked based on objective data and the satisfaction scores of key stakeholders, ie industry, students and faculty. The survey was open to all B-schools in India at www.indiabschools.com where a questionnaire designed for the survey could be downloaded. Invitation was also sent to 950 B-schools, of which 236 responded. The validation exercise was carried by a special team which cross-checked the data by asking for documents like appointment letters, balance-sheets, annual reports. Field visits were also conducted to check the veracity of information.

The objective scores were obtained by evaluating B-schools against the following seven broad parameters:

  • Placement performance
  • Intellectual capital
  • Infrastructure and facilities
  • Industry interface
  • International linkages
  • Extra-curricular activity
  • Intellectual capital

The satisfaction survey of recruiters was conducted online. Here, 718 of them participated. The recruiters were asked to rate the graduates of the B-schools they were familiar with against six parameters: effectiveness in application of knowledge of subject/skills, analytical skills, communication and presentation skills, creativity, proactive attitude and ability to work in a team. A poll was also conducted among 102 top executives in various sectors. The satisfaction survey was open to students and faculty since September 2003. In all 7,200 students and 1,689 faculty members participated. The aggregate score of the year-long exercise was taken to assess an institute. These detailed findings are available at www.indiabschools.com. iim Indore and Kozhikode did not participate while Wellingkar sent the data late.

The project team of the survey consisted of Naveen Bhatt, Tanmay Kumar Pradhan, N.K. Sinha, B. Bhattacharya, Dheeraj Awasthy, Ajay Kumar and Premchand Palety.
