Two days after a class 12 student riding a scooter was killed by an overspeeding Mercedes in Delhi's Paschim Vihar, the police have arrested a 27-year-old west Delhi businessman who was allegedly behind the wheel.

The businessman was arrested by the Crime Branch from Rajouri Garden, said a senior police officer.

To begin with, the police had the car’s logo, and parts of broken front grille. Based on a tip-off, police zeroed in on the businessman and seized his vehicle which reportedly was damaged and had its logo and grille missing.

Police suspect the businessman was drink-driving along with his friend. The police will have to work hard to prove that the driver was drunk because of the time lag between the accident and his arrest.

The victim, Atul Arora, was returning home on a scooter from a function. Hindustan Times reported that Arora didn’t have a licence and was not wearing a helmet.

The impact of the collision was such that the victim was flung in the air and suffered severe head injuries.
