Goodbye pasta, farewell salad—Steakhouse is strictly for carnivores only. Or as Arnold Schwarzenegger might put it, “Pasta la vista, baby!”

Steakhouse is probably Hyderabad’s best-kept foodie secret: a no-frills joint that organises barbecue parties for Tollywood filmstars, and takeaway steaks for the expat crowd. Chef Inam did his Master of Culinary Arts in the US, and worked in Boston and Dayton, where his customers apparently included Bruce Willis, Naomi Campbell and Al Gore. There’s a succulent range to choose from—from the hickory-flavoured Vermont steak to the 16 oz John Caleb’s Boston hamburger. But our favourite is the New York-style tenderloin steak, marinated in Inam’s “secret-herb-and-spice mix” and served with his home-made sauces. Alternatively, try the sampler platter, with portions of steak, char-grilled lamb chops, rosemary-flavoured barbecued chicken, and grilled sea-bass with a twang of herbs and garlic. According to Inam, his secrets are the cuts of meat (sourced from a friend’s farm), his special marination process, the herbs that he sun-dries to retain their aromas, and the fact that he grills the meats over charcoal, American-style, with a whiff of herbs tossed on the coals. For dessert, there’s a choice of home-made cheese-cakes and pies. The place itself is pretty basic and there’s no great ambience to speak of, but as the legendary copywriter Ed McCabe once observed, “You can’t eat ambience”. The steaks are superb, the portions generous and the value-for-money excellent. If pastas are your thing, go somewhere else.
