Murder Most Read

This year’s biggest urban murder story was possibly of a socialite-entrepreneur mother allegedly murdering her own daughter, which may have even claimed a top cop’s job. Mumbai TV news competed ferociously to report “first-ons” and exclusives about Indrani Mukherjee, her murdered daughter and a string of husbands, one of whom even redefined privacy standards by wearing a motorcycle helmet through a TV studio interview. Well, brace yourself for at least three books on the topic. And what of the current husband? Lone voices are now ruing on social media how the former media magnate’s public image was sullied.

To Cash In Or Not

Given that inconveniences around demonetisation aren’t yet over, the BJP isn’t sure how exactly to use the issue in the upcoming assembly elections, especially in Uttar Pradesh. PM Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah have been vocal about it in their rallies, but the focus has been more on explaining the purported benefits of going cashless. The opposition parties, however, seem to have got new firepower. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, speaking in Bengali at a recent rally, said she is headed to UP, not to aim at power, but to blow hot on demonetisation. Seems like the move to purge the economy of the currency denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 is all set to turn into a major poll plank for all the warring opponents in the next poll battles.

Shifting Problem

Two government departments are confronted with a peculiar problem usually faced by common people. National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), that function under the MHA, have been unable to move to a swanky new building because of lack of clearances from Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Delhi Development Authority  and Airport Authority of India. NCRB is located in cramped R.K. Puram area of the capital and BPR&D in the CGO Complex. But for clearances, their new premises have been ready since 2013. The buzz is that palms are still to be greased.

Overheard The government is believed to have declined a request to exempt all High Court judges from airport security checks. “Not feasible”, it said. SC judges are exempt from these checks.
