We absolutely love Delhi. And our beloved Delhiwalas never fail to win our hearts. The overwhelming response that Malviya Nagar’s Baba Ka Dhaba has received comes as a reminder of the generosity and large-heartedness of the ‘Dilwalas’ of Delhi. Last night, a video reflecting the hardship of the elderly couple who run a roadside eatery took social media by storm.

Delhi-based vlogger Gaurav Vasan documented the plight of the 80-year-old Kanta Prasad and his wife Badami Devi. Vasan took his viewers through what looked like seriously mouth-watering dishes, including the evergreen matar paneer and dal makhni.

In the video, Prasad was seen crying as he has been struggling to draw in customers to his modest food joint due to the pandemic. On being asked about their daily earnings, the couple told the vlogger that they were finding it difficult to make ends meet.

Later last night, a Twitter user Vasundhara Tankha Sharma shared the video on her handle. “This video completely broke my heart,” she tweeted, urging people to go and eat at the dhaba and help the hardworking elderly couple. The video left everyone with a lump in their throat, including many of us at Outlook Traveller. The tweet garnered more than one lakh likes and was retweeted by thousands. Celebrities like cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin to actors Sonam Kapoor and Raveena Tandon shared the viral video, asking their followers to lend their support to Prasad. Many journalists and political leaders, including Aam Aadmi Party’s Somnath Bharti, also shared the video and said that they would do their best to help the humble eatery. Food delivery app Zomato also responded to Sharma’s tweet and extended their helping hand.

Ever since the video went viral, people have been flocking to the dhaba in droves. Baba Ka Dhaba has been a top trend on microblogging platform Twitter today. Looks like Delhi has kept its promise and has been able to bring a smile to Prasad’s weeping face.

The incident has shown us the real power of social media. It tells us that if people choose to stop spreading hateful propagandas, such platforms could actually make a genuine impact on someone’s life.

The coronavirus pandemic and the various phases of the lockdown has severely impacted such roadside foodstalls as people are still working from their homes. Some are also not quite sure about eating outside food, given the risk of contagion. This has been a blow to many small business owners and street vendors like Prasad.

Let’s hope that social media continues to be a powerful catalyst of change and people will come out to support hardworking, yet less fortunate people. We would like to request all you foodies out there to kindly do your bit and visit Baba Ka Dhaba whenever you get a chance. We will be going there soon but for now, all we can say, on the basis of the viral video is that the food looks absolutely yum and paying a visit will definitely be worth the run.
