auz Khas Village’s culinary explosion serves foodies like us rather well, with sprightly new cafes to sample nearly every week. For those who take their food quite seriously, it’s a tough fight between eclectic bakeries, Italian and Mediterranean joints, a Latin eatery and boho cafes, most of them tucked away in the village maze, atop terraces boasting lovely lake views. Kafe D’or instead looks out to a buzzing village lane, and is a far more formal dining option. The elegant teal and white decor gives off a pleasant, Mediterranean vibe that matches the cuisine. With some help from the friendly staff, we plough through the rather exhaustive menu, and get to gorge on the flavourful baby spinach with feta cheese salad. Then, among the appetisers, the French Riviera favourite Barbajuans Petites makes its way to our table, nicely crisp, hot patties stuffed with spinach and cheese, which would have tasted wonderful with a fresh sauce or dip. Instead, we were handed a bottle of ketchup. Even so, the barbajuans are delicate, if a bit greasy, but not heavy. So when the Veg Pot Pie and One Pot Tarragon Chicken arrive, we’re ready to dig in. They have an impressive wine list to pair all that with, by the way, should you feel tempted. The finely cut exotic vegetables baked with a potato and cheese gravy is a clear winner over the chicken with a creamy white wine sauce and vegetables, which could have done with stronger flavouring. We finish off with the heavenly chocolate fondant cake—now, I would go back just for that.
