'No Major Crimes Or Law And Order Problems During My Rule'

Karnataka chief minister Yediyurappa stuck to staccato answers in an interview

After the media attention following the Mangalore pub attack and the embarrassment of falling off the chair at a press conference, Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa stuck to staccato answers in an interview to

How do you respond to the charge that your government has tacitly supported communal elements?

It is a baseless charge. There’s no truth in it.

Your government has shown no regret over the recent church attacks, attacks on the minorities...

It’s not true. I have personally condemned the acts of violence by any individual or groups. We attach utmost importance to everyone’s safety, including that of the minorities.

People say that coastal Karnataka has become a sort of Hindutva laboratory and will soon be the ‘Gujarat of the South.’ Do you agree?

I totally disagree. There is not an iota of truth in it.

Some think that the constabulary and the local administration in the coastal districts are communalised.

It is totally incorrect. Neither the government nor my party interferes in the functioning of the police.

Do you think your home minister has failed? Are you contemplating changing him?

He is doing his best. There’s no question of changing him.

What steps is your government taking to restore peace and harmony in the state?

As I said earlier, maintaining law and order tops our agenda. Police is given a free hand to maintain peace and harmony and the police force is functioning effectively. Except for a few incidents, there were no major crimes or law and order problems during the last eight months in the state.
