Begumpet is some 1,600 feet above sea level. It’s a long way off from there to 29,029 feet, the world’s highest peak, Mt Everest. For anyone from Begumpet, where temperatures in the summer can often get toasty at 40 degrees-plus, snow peaks, sub-zero temperatures and frostbites usually don’t even happen in dreams. But Poorna Malavath, still fresh into her teens, was perhaps meant for vaulting ambitions. A tribal girl from Telangana, she’s now the youngest girl in the world to scale Everest, at 13 years and 11 months. Sadhanapalli Anand Kumar, her friend from the new state, was a co-star in the enterprise, getting to the top an hour-and-a-half after her.
