Pune has long been a foodie’s delight. It has the space, the expat community and the quirky spirit that together have thrown up a bunch of brave, yummy experiments. The latest is the small but wonderful French Creperie, tucked away in the leafy lanes of Koregaon Park. The decor is simple—two walls of glass, white and light furniture, and a few prints and photographs of Paris. All the action is concentrated in the long counter that runs along one end. It is here that salads are mixed, drinks are poured and magnificent sauces are folded into perfect crepes by the French couple who runs this little gem.

We started our meal with a hearty cheese fondue (Rs 350). The bread was brown and textured, the cheese sauce was hot and peppery, and the portion generous. Next came the Caprese salad (Rs 280), zingy with fresh tomatoes, basil and soft mozzarella. Then the crepes started arriving; each crepe a substantial meal in itself. The Maison (Rs 320), fat with potatoes, a delectable creme sauce, cheese and egg, was an instant winner. The Complete (Rs 360), with its filling of ham, mushroom and cheese, was delicately flavoured. While the Mediterranean (Rs 380), with its spicy tuna and harissa filling, was lighter. But the most unusual and outstanding was the Seafood Crepe (Rs 400), stuffed with a simple leek and creme sauce and topped with two juicy, plump scallops. When it came to desserts we were too stuffed to try the tantalising waffles or tarts or hot chocolates. But the Caramelised Stewed Apple crepe (Rs 230) proved to be subtle and unusual. While the Iced Sugar Crepe (Rs 190) was simple. We left thrilled, but sad that we would have to drive the 150 km from Mumbai the next time we wanted to visit this great cafe.
