A decade ago, I had put together a detailed paper for the government on how cloud computing could be the next big export from India. Datacenters are the necessary infrastructure for setting up cloud computing. Cloud computing allows access to computing resources on the internet, where cloud denotes the internet. India has a key competitive advantage in cloud computing since the three key cost components of cloud computing, viz electricity, cooling and manpower, are all cheaper in India, especially if we setup these computing infrastructure in cooler climates such as Himachal, Sikkim or the North-East, which also have access to cheap hydroelectric power. India could have therefore become a global exporter of cloud computing and received several collateral benefits, including better connectivity and an impetus to IT-enabled industries such as BPO, KPO etc.
