August 18: Raj Bhawan says a delegation led by minister Atmaram Patel has submitted a list of MLAs and informed the governor about the formation of the Gujarat Janata Parishad (renamed Maha-gujarat Janata Party).
August 19: Governor leaves for Delhi. Dissidents, led by ministers Dilip Parikh and Atmaram Patel, announce the formation of the Gujarat Janata Party.
August 20: Vaghela announces the formation of his Rashtriya Janata Party.
August 28: Speaker declares there is no split in BJPsays 18 of the 38 MLAs whose names were appended to the resolution declaring the formation of the Mahagujarat Janata Partyhave said they are still with the BJP.
August 30: Suresh Mehta requests the governor to convene the assembly for a vote of confidence on September 3.
September 3: Since the Speaker is unwell, Deputy Speaker chairs proceedings. He recognises the split group and adjourns the assembly. Since the confidence motion is not allowed, Suresh Mehta protests. He calls on the governor with 94 MLAs. The number is confirmed after the secretary of the assembly verifies it.
September 8: Governor suggests that the House convene on September 13. Mehta asks the Speaker to convene the assembly on September 18.

September 18: After much violence, Opposition evicted from assembly. Vote of confidence passed. BJP has support of 91 plus two Independents.
September 19: Presidents rule imposed after governor sends report to Delhi.
October 21: Vaghela parades 40 MLAs and nine Independents before the governor in response to his invitation to prove its strength. BJP refuses to respond, saying it had already proved its majority.
October 22: Congress declares support to Vaghela.
October 23: Presidents rule lifted. Vaghela sworn in as chief minister.
