At strategic events through this year, Ambani had hinted at his interests. "If I can change and make even a small difference, I think it is worth my while and my time," he told the bbc when asked whether he would join active politics. Ambani will be an Independent, supported by his closest political friends, the Samajwadi Party (SP) and its leaders, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Amar Singh. However, some friends and associates have pointed out to him that politically it would have befitted his stature to walk into the Rajya Sabha as the President’s nominee.

Meanwhile, by default or design, his Reliance Energy signed an agreement with the Mulayam government to set up a 3,740-megawatt gas-based power project costing Rs 11,000 crore in the state the day he filed his nomination.
