India will spend Rs 2,200 crore on e-governance this year, says a study by Skoch Consultancy Services. In 2002-03, Rs 1,500 crore was spent on computerisation of the government. Study findings show that e-governance has brought about transparency and has reduced corruption. And in the best e-governance projects in the country, Uttaranchal’s education programme ‘Aarohi’ tops the list. The second place is shared by the Kalyan-Dombivili Municipal Corporation in Maharashtra, an online bill payment facility in Bangalore and the Indian Railways computerised ticketing facility. The report predicts a 23 per cent annual increase in spending on e-governance.
